Online Course

The Evolve Community has developed a comprehensive online course that provides in-depth training on the key aspects of water quality and monitoring of freshwater waterways. The course is designed for individuals who are passionate about protecting our aquatic ecosystems and want to gain the knowledge and skills needed to conduct water quality assessments and contribute to citizen science initiatives.

Kaitiakitanga, Water Management & Restoration Certificate program delves into the profound Māori principles guiding environmental stewardship. These certificates typically explore how whakapapa (genealogy) connects all living things, including people, to the whenua (land) and its waterways, emphasizing that these are not just resources but ancestors with their own mana. A core focus is on Waimāori (freshwater) management, understanding its cultural significance and ecological health, often using traditional Māori water classification systems like waiora (life-giving, pure water) and waimate (degraded or lifeless water) to assess and guide restoration efforts, ensuring a holistic approach to water quality and ecosystem health.

In addition to the theoretical knowledge, the course includes practical exercises and field trips to real-world water bodies. Participants will have the opportunity to apply their learning under the guidance of experienced instructors and gain hands-on experience in conducting water quality assessments. The course is designed to be accessible to individuals with a range of backgrounds and interests, from students and community members to professionals in the environmental field.

By completing the course, participants will gain a solid foundation in water quality science and develop the skills and knowledge needed to become active stewards of their local waterways. They will also join a network of like-minded individuals who share a passion for protecting our aquatic ecosystems.

Note: This course is also designed for local community groups, Hapu and Iwi who would like to understand the basics of how to set up a Water Monitoring programme.
